The brief for this project was to create spaces which would adapt as its clients would grow. This family-owned farmhouse at the periphery of one of Malta’s villages enjoys abundant views in different directions with stunning light that makes its way through the property.

The interventions by the design team sought to be sensitive to the original fabric without compromising the character of the space. The features of the old part of the house were retained in their entirety, converted into resting spaces and a haven for the family’s young daughter.

Perched above the original dwelling, a new living space was designed free of internal walls. The extension which mirrored the original geometry of the house, roofed over the patio and liberated a new courtyard that breathes light and ventilation throughout the whole house. This new volume introduced large apertures which run the height of the building, creating a new monumentality for the space, that dances in daylight.

The main entertaining space features an open kitchen, dining room and living space with a wide fireplace as the main visual component.

A key element of the project came in the introduction of a steel cable staircase at the spine of the house, allowing for clear visibility across all levels and a permeable focus piece for the property. A central planter, with creepers making their way up the steel cables, grows with its owners.  This iconic element mirrors the linearity of the central kitchen, a bespoke project which features a lava top and carefullly crafted details, tailor-made to match the client’s requirements.

The property boasts a beautiful workspace at the top floor which enjoys the views of a breathtaking Maltese roof and landscape. Whilst it is currently a sanctuary for adults to work from in peace, it will continue to evolve as a study and library as the family grows and needs shift.
